Premier Dalton McGuinty presented a $17.5 billion proposal for the largest transit expansion in Canadian history today.
The proposal contains 52 transit projects in total, including:
The proposal also includes: more transit in York, Durham and Peel Regions; two light rapid transit lines in Hamilton; and more express buses along Highway 407.
The plan has both personal and global issues at its heart: “Life is busy enough without sitting on a highway when you need to get home to get the kids to soccer or to help them with homework . . . MoveOntario 2020 includes 902 kilometres of new or improved rapid transit that will move people efficiently around the region. It will result in 800 million new transit trips per year, taking 300 million car trips off GTA roads. This will cut smog and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 10 megatonnes by 2020.”
The plan will be overseen by the GTTA and is expected to be 66% complete by 2015 and 95% complete by 2020. The McGuinty government has pledged $11.5 billion - 65% of the total bill - to the project.
BA Group’s former President, Edward Levy, has been invited to join, on a voluntary basis, an advisory committee formed by the GTTA to help review and implement the MoveOntatio 2020 initiative.
